Replacing Missing Teeth

What are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is used to support one or more false teeth. A more permanent alternative to dentures, it is a titanium fixture that can replace the root of a tooth when it fails. Just like a tooth root, it is placed into the jawbone.

Implants leave you with natural-looking teeth that are so secure you’ll probably forget they are not the ones you were born with. If good oral hygiene is maintained, then implants can last a lifetime. If you don’t look after your implants they will develop a coating similar to that found on neglected natural teeth. Left untreated, this can lead to gum infection, bleeding, soreness and general discomfort. You could get all these problems with natural teeth.

Before having an implant, you will need an initial assessment and scan and maybe even some oral surgery.

What are the advantages of a dental implant?

A dental implant provides several advantages over other tooth replacement options. In addition to looking and functioning like a natural tooth, a dental implant replaces a single tooth without sacrificing the health of neighbouring teeth. The other common treatment for the loss of a single tooth, a tooth-supported fixed bridge, requires that adjacent teeth be ground down to support the cemented bridge.

Because a dental implant will replace your tooth root, the bone is better preserved. With a bridge, some of the bone that previously surrounded the tooth begins to resorb (deteriorate). Dental implants integrate with your jawbone, helping to keep the bone healthy and intact.

In the long term, a single implant can be more aesthetic and easier to keep clean than a bridge. Gums can recede around a bridge, leaving a visible defect when the metal base or collar of the bridge becomes exposed. Resorbed bone beneath the bridge can lead to an unattractive smile. And, the cement holding the bridge in place can wash out, allowing bacteria to decay the teeth that anchor the bridge.

The amount of medication needed during and after surgery led Gerry to seek alternative therapies and he graduated from The Royal London Homeopathic Hospital in 1999.

Gerry has a special interest in Implantology and sedation. He has attended the renowned Hilt Tatum Institute in Lille, France to further develop his surgery and implantology skills, altogether giving a treatment philosophy combining the highest conventional methods alongside complementary alternatives.

Gerry is a member of the Association of Dental Implantologists and attends many conferences at home and abroad.
